Stan Lee, the man who ushered in a comic-book dynasty for Marvel by creating characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men, passed away Monday in Los Angeles at the age of 95.

According to Variety, Lee was declared dead shortly after being taken to Cedars Sinai Medica Center in Los Angeles.

During his extensive time in the industry, Lee created enduring characters like the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Hulk, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Daredevil.

In 1972, Lee left Marvel after serving as both editor-in-chief and chairman. He would assume the title of chairman emeritus, as well as remain a member of the editorial board.

Lee has made cameos in all of the Marvel movies and received production credit on TV series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, The Gifted, Inhumans, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage.

He is survived by his daughter Joan Celia.
