A gay man slept with his straight roommate and now things are super awkward

It’s the classic, age-old dilemma: gay man sleeps with straight bro roommate, only to be given the silent treatment later on.

Ok, maybe it’s not exactly classic or age-old. But it is a dilemma and it did happen to a man recently who has since sought the wisdom of Slate‘s advice guru, Rich Juzwiak.

In his letter, the man, who identifies himself as “Straight Shooter,” says that he slept with one of his straight roommates when they were both drunk.

“I am the only gay guy (seemingly!) in a shared house of five guys, and this was very much unplanned,” he continues. “I was totally fine with it, and he acted like he was too, but it’s clear he’s not.”

Time clearly doesn’t heal all wounds because “Straight Shooter” then adds, “A month later, I now hear him having loud sex with women regularly, which I definitely never heard before.”

If you’re worried that his roommate has grown hostile with him, “Straight Shooter” assures us he has not, but did mention that “he won’t really look me in the eye either.”

Not surprisingly, the other men in the house noticed something going on and even asked “Straight Shooter” if he’d noticed their fellow straight bro “acting strangely.”

Ultimately, “Straight Shooter” just wants to know: should he let the whole thing go?

Right off the bat, Rich advises him to “relax” and to “stop beating yourself up.”

“It’s not dumb to hook up with a self-identified straight guy; it’s hot,” he says. “You (presumably) introduced him to the joys of gay sex, and he clearly wanted to learn sometime.”

“What was on the “dumb” side (to use your word) was hooking up with a platonic roommate, as now you have to look at him not looking at you every day.”

“Like many of life’s pleasures, hooking up with a straight (or closeted) guy comes with a cost,” Rich advised. “The price you pay for hooking up with someone who is less than secure in his sexuality is the awkwardness that comes after. Let him sort this out on his own, or at most, let him make the first move.
