It was just yesterday that his latest film, Bohemian Rhapsody, was nominated for 5 Academy Awards. Today, Bryan Singer faces new allegations of sexual misconduct.
The Atlantic has published a shocking report regarding those allegations. They spoke with over 50 sources, including four men who had yet to speak with media about their encounters and who say Singer sexually assaulted and molested them when they were underage.
“Some of the alleged victims say they were seduced by the director while underage; others say they were raped,” The Atlantic writes. “The victims we interviewed told us these experiences left them psychologically damaged, with substance-abuse problems, depression, and PTSD.”
The article describes Singer as “a troubled man who surrounded himself with vulnerable teenage boys, many of them estranged from their families.” Reports from alleged victims “suggest that Singer didn’t act alone” and was often helped in one way or another by those close to him, like friends and colleagues “who brought him young men.”
Two of the alleged victims spoke of sexual encounters with Singer in the 1990s. Both were underage at the time.
“A man we’ll call Eric told us that he was 17 in 1997 when he and Singer had sex at a party at the director’s house; another we’ll call Andy says he was only 15 that same year, when he and Singer had sex in a Beverly Hills mansion,” The Atlantic reports. “Both men say Singer, who was then in his early 30s, knew they were under 18, the age of consent in California. (They asked The Atlantic to conceal their identity for fear of retaliation, and because they didn’t want certain details about their past made public.)”
In October 2018, Singer released a statement against an article he said was to be published in the near future. He called it “fictional and irresponsible” and claimed the article was to be published around the time of Bohemian Rhapsody‘s release by Esquire.
“I have known for some time that [there may be] a negative article about me,” Singer wrote. “They have contacted my friends, colleagues and people I don’t even know. In today’s climate where people’s careers are being harmed by mere accusations, what [these reporters are] attempting to do is a reckless disregard for the truth, making assumptions that are fictional and irresponsible.”
Singer was fired as the director of Bohemian Rhapsody due to “repeated absences from the set” and quickly replaced with Dexter Fletcher. However, Singer remains credited as the only director of the film.
